New LNG Dual-Fuel Vessels Ordered for Delivery

A significant order for new container vessels has been placed, comprising twelve units designed with dual-fuel capabilities. These vessels will be equipped to run on both liquefied natural gas (LNG) and traditional marine fuels, marking a continued trend towards diversified fuel options in the shipping sector.

The shipbuilding contract for these vessels was finalised with a total value of $2.70 billion. The agreement involves two prominent Chinese shipbuilding and trading entities, underscoring the nation's role in maritime construction.

Each of the new container vessels will have a substantial capacity, rated at 22,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU). This capacity positions them among the larger vessels in the global container fleet, reflecting ongoing demand for high-volume shipping solutions.

Deliveries of these vessels are scheduled to commence in 2028, with the full fleet expected to be in service by 2030. This phased delivery schedule allows for the gradual integration of the new tonnage into existing operational networks.

The adoption of LNG as a marine fuel is a key development in the industry, offering potential benefits related to emissions profiles. The dual-fuel engine design provides operational flexibility, allowing vessels to switch between fuel types based on availability, cost, and regulatory requirements.
