Alternative Fuelled Vessel Orders See Significant Rise

Orders for alternative-fuelled vessels reached 69 in September, marking the highest monthly total observed since October 2024. This activity contributed to a robust third quarter in 2026, which saw 168 orders placed.

This quarterly total represents the busiest period for such orders since the third quarter of 2024. Overall, 311 alternative-fuelled vessel orders have been registered in 2026 to date, indicating a 53% increase compared to the same period in the previous year.

Liquefied natural gas (LNG) was a prominent fuel choice in September, accounting for 48 of the month's orders. These LNG-powered vessels spanned various categories, including container ships, car carriers, bulk carriers, and ro-ro cargo vessels.

Beyond LNG, September's orders also included 12 ethanol-fuelled bulk carriers. Additionally, nine vessels capable of running on liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) were ordered. This diversity reflects ongoing investment across a range of fuel types and vessel segments.

Industry observations suggest that while the year began with a slower pace, ordering activity gained considerable momentum in the third quarter. The sustained level of contracting indicates continued strategic investment in alternative fuel capabilities as part of long-term fleet development plans.
