Median last-mile delivery costs have seen another substantial increase, according to recent industry research. The analysis, based on survey data from delivery operators, indicates a 12% rise in costs, mirroring the increase observed in the previous year. This consistent upward trend suggests a potential shift in the operational cost landscape for last-mile logistics.
The research highlights that a majority of operators, specifically six out of ten, experienced cost increases exceeding 10%. Furthermore, one in five reported increases above 20%. A significant 88% of operators noted that delivery cost growth was either on par with or outstripping revenue growth, indicating considerable pressure on profit margins. Only a small fraction of operators are currently generating operating leverage.
Key factors contributing to these rising costs include fuel expenses, which were cited by 70% of operators as a top-three pressure. Driver costs and availability were also a significant concern for 51% of respondents, while vehicle operating costs affected 40%. Inefficient routing and failed deliveries or returns were also identified as notable cost drivers.
Industry experts suggest that these cost increases are a combination of public rate adjustments and operational inefficiencies. While a portion of the rise can be attributed to standard rate increases from major carriers, a substantial segment is linked to internal operational challenges within delivery networks. This dual pressure necessitates a strategic approach to cost management.
In response to these pressures, reducing delivery costs has become a primary investment priority for many operators, with 45% listing it among their top three. Larger companies, those with revenues exceeding $1 billion, reported a median cost increase of 13.8%, which was the highest among all size categories examined in the study.
Customer expectations regarding delivery reliability are also influencing operational costs. Predictable delivery times and successful first-attempt deliveries were identified as the most crucial aspects of the delivery promise. Operators prioritising predictable delivery demonstrated higher on-time performance and lower cost increases compared to those focusing solely on speed. Enhanced visibility and proactive communication, such as delay notifications, were also linked to improved on-time performance and more favourable cost outcomes.
The adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) in logistics operations is progressing, with more operators moving from implementation to operational stages. Leading AI applications include estimated time of arrival (ETA) prediction and demand forecasting. While trust in AI for real-time operational decisions is still developing, the trend indicates a growing reliance on technology to address complex logistical challenges and potentially mitigate cost pressures.
